The COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Amendment) Act (“Act”) that was passed in Parliament on 5 June 2020 provides a rental relief framework for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The rental relief framework aims to help affected SMEs* who need more time and support to recover from the impact of COVID-19, by providing mandated co-sharing of rental obligations between the Government, landlords and tenants.
These measures are intended to establish a baseline position for the handling of tenants’ rental obligations. Landlords and tenants are encouraged to continue to try and work out mutually agreeable arrangements that best address their specific circumstances.
The new rental relief provisions under Part 2A of the Act will come into force by end-July 2020. Do note that the information provided on the Ministry of Law’s website is subject to the finalisation of the regulations. Kindly find below summary of the Rental Relief Framework released.
